Do  you ever wonder how pistachios, almonds, cashews, brazil nuts and pine nuts  grow? Pretty surprising to me.  The only one I knew was almond.

Check Your Herbal Supplements!

Recently there was an article in the New York Times  discussing the legitimacy of herbal supplements that are sold in certain NY stores (GNC, Walgreens, Target, and Walmart). This is not the first time studies have been done to see if the supplements actually contained the herbs they say they have and will likely not be the last time.

New York Attorney General Targets Supplements at Major Retailers

The study was conducted by purchasing the supplements in various store locations and testing them for the DNA of the active ingredients that they claimed to contain. The majority of the tests came back negative and also indicated many items that were NOT listed in the ingredients list. Many of these unlisted ingredients were used as fillers and could also be major allergens, such as nuts and wheat. Check your supplements!

The tested and reported brands are as follows: GNC (Herbal Plus), Walgreens (Finest Nutrition), Target (Up & Up), Walmart (Spring Valley). Here is an article breaking down the supplements that were tested and whether or not the claimed ingredient was present:

The American Botantical Counsel has a Botanical Adulterants Reporting Program that is a relatively new program that reports on supplements that have false ingredients listed. It is a report based system and updates as reports and inquiries are submitted.

I Quit Sugar with Sarah Wilson

I recently attended a  Standard Process seminar about Women’s Health in New York City.  It was fantastic and  informative. Among the many things I learned about women’s health, I also found out about Sarah Wilson who wrote a book called  I Quit Sugar.  She has become a sensation in Australia.  While she was not a speaker at the conference I really loved her website and content so I thought I would pass it on for anyone interested in quitting sugar.

Everybody Eats Bakery

One of my patients, was telling us about this great bakery in Gowanus,  Everybody Eats, Inc. She had to get a cake for her son to bring to school for his birthday that accommodated the various allergies in the class. The search for a gluten-free, nut-free, dairy-free cake found her walking 45 minutes from her house to this bakery. “I’m a great mom. I should get mom of the year award.”

So, I went to check it out myself with my family.  The owners are extremely lovely. We were greeted with warm chocolate chip cookies and I splurged on one. We bought bagels, pizza crust, and some rolls. Although I try to keep my carbs low I was  not feeling too guilty. These products can be frozen and eaten whenever you’re ready to eat them. Everybody Eats is a great find. Go check it out!

What I learned from a Toothache

A few weeks ago I had a really bad toothache.  I went to my regular dentist who took an x-ray and told me there was nothing wrong. He said I should keep doing body work because it might be referred pain from my neck.

Me being me I tried everything that whole week. I got  adjusted,  I had acupuncture and went to various other healers,  all to no avail.  On Sunday morning I woke up in even worse pain with my subconscious screaming at me: “It’s your tooth!”

Since nothing I was doing was helping,  I was feeling rather hopeless. I decided that Monday morning I would go to see another dentist that my dentist  recommended to see if I might need a root canal.

With nothing left to do until then, I decided to read the book that my meditation teacher had recommended, “Dissolving Pain” by Les Fehmi.  I thought I might as well try it. I read that book from cover to cover and I have to say it was literally a miracle.  I can’t say enough about it. By Monday morning, when I woke up, I had no pain whatsoever.

I made the dentist appointment anyway but I was wondering if I should even go.  I went and he decided that I needed a root canal. I was living in fear of that pain coming back, so I was gladly about to do it. He started drilling to get rid of my old filling,  stopped and said,  “Bad news, can’t do a root canal. Your tooth is cracked.” Then he had to send me to yet another dentist who extracted the tooth.

Since I’ve had my tooth pulled, I have not had any pain.   I have been doing the exercises from the book for occasional aches and pains when I feel like I need it.  I highly recommend this book. I have recommended it to many patients and have gotten great feedback.

First, of course make sure you know why you have the pain.  Pain is the body’s way of telling you there is something wrong.  Once you know what it is and are taking the necessary steps towards healing, this book is invaluable.

My First Blog

A lot of people have asked me that over the years how and why I became a chiropractor.

As a kid my parents were not very healthy.  My father had his first heart attack at 45 years old and a fatal heart attack at age 46 in 1973. My mother has had many heart attacks. After her third one at 51 years old she had triple bypass surgery. They both smoked and my mother had the added complication of taking birth control pills at the high doses they started out with in the 1960’s. Also, their diet was very unhealthy:  margarine, canned vegetables, soda and junk food.

I became health-conscious in high school. I would get off the school bus early to go the health food store.  I wandered around the store looking at products thinking that if the health food store had a substitute for the products in the regular supermarket, there had to be something wrong with the ones in the regular supermarket.  For example, candles.  Regular candles might have lead wicks that you breathe in when they burn.  I read books popular in the 70’s like Gary Null, Adele Davis and Jethro Kloss.

My interests continued to develop and I decided to study nutrition in college.  The classical nutrition programs at that time were not about holistic healthy foods.  The programs were geared for dietetics for hospitals. Hospital food? Healthy?  I was not too sure about that but it was the only option.  While I was in college, I heard about chiropractic. The theory I first learned about was that people become ill from emotional stress, physical stress and chemical stress which in turn affects the nervous system. Nutrition only took into account chemical stress. The consideration of emotional and physical stress made more sense to me.  Chiropractic was still pretty unknown at this time, though the first chiropractic adjustment was given in 1895.  Chiropractic seemed to be a very comprehensive way to promote and maintain health. I decided to go to chiropractic school and graduated in 1984. It is one of the best decisions I ever made.

I went out of my way to learn from as many of the old time chiropractors as I could because they had so much passion.  Today, there are many old and new techniques to choose from.  I truly believe if one chiropractic technique doesn’t help, you should keep looking for the right one that your body responds to.

I feel extremely grateful to have found my purpose with my chosen career but also fortunate to have benefited as a patient as well.  All these years I have watched the holistic way of life become more mainstream and I could not be more pleased.

These days I focus on wellness and prevention through chiropractic  care,  proper nutrition and supplementation when necessary.
